7 ways to connect people and enhance wellbeing through activities!

As we live in an ever-changing world, most recently impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many things care providers should consider if they are to create memorable experiences and deliver activities to support service users’ wellbeing.

As a sector we are constantly checking the latest updates relating to the various restrictions the sector still faces, and whilst much of society is returning to ‘normal’ and some guidance has been updated such as visiting rules, some has not.

“What we must do now is continue the excellent work of our workforce and be dynamic in our approach to activities, to give those we care for the best possible opportunities which they truly deserve. The opportunities are endless – let’s not allow the pandemic to halt our delivery and commitment to ensuring people in care have access to memorable experiences.” Geoffrey Cox, Managing Director at Southern Healthcare via CMM Magazine.

Here are some ways to connect people and enhance wellbeing through activity:

  • Arts and crafts – painting, drawing, making things such as Halloween/Christmas decorations.
  • Games and quizzes – board games, bingo and so much more!
  • Indoor hospitality – do you have an area in your service you could turn into a dance floor? Perhaps you could host a themed evening meal. One of our AJ Support Workers hosted a karaoke evening this week in the service he was working in!
  • Sports – anything from ball games to general exercise. Movement is great to help improve wellbeing.
  • Bring the outside in – plant seeds and grow flowers, or get creative and decorate plant pots or make birdhouses.
  • Make outside activities an option – create wildlife areas in gardens or visit local nature reserves.
  • Keep an eye on upcoming community events – with Halloween, Bonfire night and Christmas all around the corner, there will be lots of local activities to participate in. Perhaps a Halloween walk, going to a bonfire or going to the Christmas lights!
